ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

human-machine interaction

Human-machine interaction or HMI is when people use computers or other machines to do things. Humans give the machines instructions or commands on how to do things, and the machines respond by following the instructions and carrying out tasks. For example, when you type something into a search engine like Google, the machine reads what you type in and shows you a list of websites with information related to what you searched for. Another example is when you use a voice-activated virtual assistant like Alexa or Siri; when you tell them to do something like play a song, they'll respond by playing the song you asked for. HMI is an important part of how we use technology in everyday life.
