ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Cold pad batch

A cold pad batch is like making a big pot of soup. First, you mix some ingredients together to make a cold soup base. Then you add some other ingredients, like meat or vegetables, into the pot. Next, you turn on the heat and let everything cook together until it's ready to eat.

With a cold pad batch, you're making a type of fabric dye instead of soup. You start by mixing some chemicals, called "dyestuff" and "auxiliaries," together in a big container of water. This creates the cold dye bath.

Then, you add in some fabric, like a shirt or dress, into the container with the cold dye bath. Just like cooking, you have to mix the fabric around so that it gets even coverage from the dye.

After the fabric has soaked in the dye bath for a while – maybe a few hours – you take it out and rinse it off. Once it's dry, you'll have a shirt or dress that's a different color than it was before!
