ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Customer-premises equipment

Okay kiddo, so imagine you and your family have a cool new toy that you all like to play with. But in order to play with this toy, you have to plug it into the wall to make it work.

Now, let's say you have a special room in your house where you like to play with this toy. In that room, you have a special plug in the wall called an "outlet" where you can plug your toy in. This outlet is like a special gate that lets the toy connect to the power it needs to work.

So, in the same way, when people use the internet at home, they usually have a special device called "customer-premises equipment" or "CPE" for short. This device might be a router or a modem, and it helps your internet connect to your computer, tablet or smartphone.

Just like the outlet in your special room, the CPE at home connects your device to the bigger network of the internet, so you can surf the web and play games online.

So whenever you want to use the internet at home, just remember that you need the CPE to make it work, just like you need the outlet in your special room to power your toy. And that's it - customer-premises equipment made easy!
