ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Exokernel

Exokernel is a type of computer operating system that assigns tasks directly to the computer hardware. It gives each application direct control over the hardware, instead of the operating system controlling everything. This means that applications run faster, but it makes them more complicated to write. Exokernel can help computer users run their applications more efficiently, but only if they know how to manage the hardware themselves.
