ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Extraordinary magnetoresistance

Do you remember what magnets are? They're something that can stick to your fridge, right? Well, imagine if you had two really strong magnets and you could make them move around in a circle. This would create a special kind of electricity called a current. Scientists discovered that if you put a special material between these magnets, something really cool happens.

This special material is called a magnetic material and it can change how much electricity flows through it when it's near magnets. Sort of like how when you put your finger on a hose, it changes how much water can flow. Scientists noticed that when they put this material in between the two magnets, the amount of electricity that flowed through it changed by a lot. They called this change in electricity the "extraordinary magnetoresistance" because it's a really big change.

Think of it like turning the faucet all the way on and off really quickly. The water pressure changes a lot, right? Well, in this case, the amount of electricity flowing through this special material changes a lot when it's near magnets. Scientists think that this could be really useful in things like computer hard drives and sensors that are used to measure things like how fast a car is going.

So, to sum it up, the extraordinary magnetoresistance is a really big change in how much electricity flows through a special material when it's near magnets. Scientists think it could be super useful in lots of cool new technologies!
