ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

German-occupied Poland

Imagine you have a big toy box, but someone else comes in and takes all of your favorite toys. That's kind of what happened to Poland when Germany took over during World War II. Germany was in charge of Poland and made all the rules. Poland lost control of their own country and their government. People who lived in Poland could only do what the German bosses said they could do.

The German soldiers were mean to the people who lived in Poland. They made them work really hard and didn't give them enough food to eat. The German bosses used the people in Poland to make things for them, like guns and tanks. They made the people work really long hours, and if someone didn't work hard enough, they were punished. It was like having a really mean babysitter who made you do everything their way.

The German bosses also made the Polish people wear badges to show that they were different, and sometimes they even made them wear special clothes. This was because the German bosses didn't like the Polish people and wanted everyone else to know they were different.

During the occupation, many people in Poland were killed or sent to concentration camps. This was because the German bosses wanted to get rid of people who didn't agree with them or who they thought were different. It was a really scary time for the people in Poland, and many of them had to hide or leave their homes to stay safe.

Eventually, the war ended and Poland was free again. But the German occupation was a really bad time in Poland's history, and people still remember and talk about it today.
