Operation Gold

Operation Gold was a plan by the United States during the Cold War to listen to secret conversations between the Russians. It involved the United States drilling a hole into the ground near the Russian embassy in Berlin and running a long, thin wire from the American embassy to the Russian embassy. The wire would pick up signals from the Russian embassy and send them back to the United States for the government to listen to and figure out what the Russians were talking about. The operation was kept very secret and was only revealed after the Cold War ended.
