ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Registered jack

A registered jack (RJ) is a little thing that helps you connect things like telephones or computers to the wires that make them work. You know how your toys have different shapes for different holes? Well, an RJ is like a shape for a hole that helps the wires talk to each other.

It has six little metal parts inside that touch the wires and tell them what to do. They might tell them to be quiet or to make a sound, like a beep or a ring, so you know someone is trying to talk to you.

Some RJs are round, while others are rectangular. They might be different colors, like white or gray. But they all do the same thing - help your things talk to each other and work together.
