ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Ériu

Hey there kiddo! Today, we're going to talk about something called "ériu".

So, have you ever heard of Ireland? "Ériu" is actually an old name for Ireland! People used to call it that a long, long time ago.

Back then, people believed that Ériu was actually a goddess who protected and looked after the land of Ireland. People would sometimes pray or even make offerings to her to ask for good crops, nice weather, and other things like that.

These days, people don't really believe that Ériu is a real goddess. But some people still use the name Ériu to talk about Ireland in a special, kind of poetic way.

So there you have it, kiddo: Ériu is an old, fancy name for Ireland. And even though people don't really believe in the goddess anymore, the name still has a special place in Irish history and culture.
