Ġgantija

Ġgantija is a very old temple located on the island of Gozo in Malta. It is so old that it was built around 3600BC which is a really, really long time ago! It was believed to be built by very early humans known as the 'Megalithic Builders' who also built many other similar temples on the islands of Malta and Gozo.

To give you an idea of how it might have looked, imagine a really big building made of rocks that is shaped like a rectangle with two big towers on either end. This is what Ġgantija used to look like when it was first built!

One of the really amazing things about Ġgantija is that some of the rocks used to build it are huge and weigh a lot! They are so big that it's hard to imagine how the 'Megalithic Builders' were able to move them into place. But they did! They probably used ropes and wooden rollers to move them around, which would have taken a lot of hard work and effort.

Another cool thing about Ġgantija is that it seems to have been built to line up with the sun. The entrance of the temple faces east so that it gets the first rays of the morning sun. This was probably really important to the 'Megalithic Builders' who believed in the power of the sun and worshipped it as a god.

Today, Ġgantija is a protected site and is visited by lots of people from all over the world who want to see and learn about this amazing piece of history. It's a really cool place to visit and imagine what life was like for the 'Megalithic Builders' who created this incredible temple!
