ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

'Pataphysics

Okay kiddo, you know how we have science to help us understand things like how things work, and how nature works? Well, there's something called 'pataphysics which is kind of like science, but it's different.

See, 'pataphysics is a made up word (that sounds fancy, huh?). It was made up by a French writer and playwright named Alfred Jarry a long time ago. He made it up because he thought it was funny and interesting.

Now, what 'pataphysics does is it tries to study things that don't really make sense, or things that are too abstract to study with regular science. You could say that it's a science of imaginary things, or things that don't exist in the real world.

It's like playing pretend or make-believe, but with rules and methods that are made up. The people who study 'pataphysics might ask questions like, "What would happen if a banana was square instead of round?" or "What are the qualities of a song that doesn't exist?"

It might sound kind of silly, but some people find it very interesting and creative. You know how sometimes when you play with your toys, you make up stories or games that don't make sense, but they're still fun? Well, 'pataphysics is kind of like that, but for grown-ups.
