ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

1383–1385 Crisis

Okay kiddo, so a long time ago in the years 1383 to 1385, there was a big problem in Portugal. The country was going through a tough time because the King, King Fernando, had died and his wife, Queen Leonor, was in charge.

But some people didn't like that idea. They thought that a woman shouldn't be in charge and they wanted a man to lead the country. So they supported the King's half-brother, John, who was living in England at the time. John was kind of like a prince, but he wasn't officially the next in line for the throne.

Meanwhile, Queen Leonor was doing her best to keep the country together, but she was facing a lot of opposition. She appointed a man named João Fernandes Andeiro to help her rule, but some people didn't like him either.

Things got really bad in 1383 when João Fernandes Andeiro was murdered. Some people believe Queen Leonor was behind it, but others think it could have been people who wanted John to become king.

The country was in chaos. Queen Leonor knew she needed help to keep the throne, so she looked to her neighbors for support. She made a deal with the King of Castile, another country nearby, to marry one of her daughters to his son, and in exchange, he promised to help her keep control of Portugal.

But this made things worse. Now people were even more angry because they didn't want Portugal to become part of Castile. They wanted their own king, not someone who was controlled by a neighboring country.

Finally, in 1385, there was a big battle between Queen Leonor's forces and John's forces. It was a close battle, but in the end, Portugal won. A man named João I became the new king, and he ruled until 1433.

So, in summary, there was a big problem in Portugal in the 1380s because the queen was in charge and some people wanted a man to lead the country. There was a lot of fighting and chaos, including a murder and a deal with a neighboring country that made things worse. But eventually, a new king was crowned, and he ruled for a long time.
