In 1902, people were still learning how to fly like birds. But some brave and curious folks called aviators were trying hard to make flying possible. They were trying to build airplanes that could fly.
At that time, a man named Gustave Whitehead claimed that he flew an airplane for the first time. But many people did not believe him because there was no evidence. So, people were still trying to figure out who the real first aviator was.
Meanwhile, the Wright Brothers were also tirelessly working on creating a flying machine. They had been experimenting for years and finally made a breakthrough in 1902 when they created their third glider. Their glider was able to fly farther and faster than their previous ones.
They tested their glider at a place in Ohio called Kitty Hawk, which was a windy and sandy area. They wanted to see if their glider could fly in the same conditions as a real plane. They spent a lot of time studying how birds fly and how they can control their flights.
Their third glider flew for 622 feet and stayed in the air for 26 seconds. This was a very long time to fly, and it showed that a real airplane could be possible if they kept working on it.
So, in 1902, two important things happened in the history of aviation. Gustave Whitehead claimed he flew an airplane for the first time, but the Wright Brothers made a significant improvement in their glider, which helped propel them towards creating the first successful airplane.
