A long time ago, in the year 1981, some people in Spain wanted to take over the government. They planned to do this by using violence and force. This is called a "coup d'état attempt."
These people were soldiers who were unhappy with the government at the time. They thought they could do a better job running the country. But, most people in Spain did not want this to happen. They wanted to choose their own leaders through fair elections.
On the day of the coup d'état attempt, these soldiers came to the Spanish parliament building with guns and took the lawmakers hostage. They wanted the control of the government.
Thankfully, the people of Spain did not like this and they protested in the streets to show their support for democracy. They wanted to stop the soldiers from doing any harm. The King of Spain, who is like the boss of the country, also spoke on TV and told the soldiers to stop.
Eventually, after a few hours, these soldiers realized that most of the people did not want them to take over the government. They gave up and released the hostages unharmed. And so, Spain remained a democracy and the people continued to choose their own leaders through elections.
