ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

1991 August Coup

Okay kiddo, let me tell you a story about what happened in August 1991. You know how sometimes grown-ups don't agree on things and fight about what's the best way to do something? Well, that's what happened in the Soviet Union. The Soviet Union was a big country that had many smaller countries in it, and they all had to follow the rules that the big country made.

But some of the powerful grown-ups in the Soviet Union didn't like the way things were going. They thought that the leader of the country, a man named Mikhail Gorbachev, wasn't doing a good job as the boss. So they decided to try and take over the government and make things go their way.

This taking over of the government is called a "coup," and it means trying to take control of a country without going through the normal process of elections and following the laws. But little did they know, many people in the country didn't like the idea of a coup and wanted things to stay the way they were.

The people who were against the coup started protesting in the streets, and the army was divided into two sides. Some soldiers were loyal to the people trying to do the coup, and some soldiers were loyal to the government led by Gorbachev. But as more people protested, the soldiers who were loyal to Gorbachev and the government started to get stronger.

In the end, Gorbachev came back to power, and the people who tried to do the coup were arrested. The Soviet Union eventually fell apart, and many of the smaller countries became their own countries. This whole situation was a big lesson about the importance of following the laws and not trying to take over a country in an unfair way.
