ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

1st meridian west

Okay kiddo, so the Earth is a big round ball and we use lines to help us figure out where we are on it. These lines are called meridians. They go from the North Pole to the South Pole and help us measure how far east or west we are.

The 1st meridian west is a specific line that starts at the North Pole and goes down to the South Pole, passing through the prime meridian at the Royal Observatory in Greenwich, London, England. It's called the 1st meridian west because it's one of the first lines we use to measure how far west we are from the prime meridian.

When we use meridians to figure out where we are on a map or a GPS device, we might see numbers that look like this: 1° W. This means we are 1 degree west of the 1st meridian west.

So, the 1st meridian west is just a line that helps us figure out where we are on the Earth and how far west we are from the prime meridian.
