ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

2009 G-20 London summit protests

In 2009, a bunch of important people from all over the world, called the G-20, gathered in London to talk about money and how to make the economy better. Some people didn't like what the G-20 were doing and they decided to protest. This means they got together in big groups, carried banners and signs and shouted out what they didn't like about the governments and the economy.

These protesters thought that the G-20 was unfair because they only supported big companies and rich people, while regular people didn't get any help when they needed it. They were also upset that some of the G-20 members were doing things that hurt the environment.

But then, some of the protesters got really angry and started smashing windows, setting fires, and throwing things at the police. That is NOT okay, even if you're upset. Protesting is important, but it needs to be peaceful.

The police tried to stop the protesters from doing damage to the city, but it got pretty scary and violent. This made some people wonder if the police were too harsh and if they hurt some of the protesters more than they should have.

This event made lots of people realize that there were problems in the world that needed to be fixed. G-20 members had to start thinking seriously about how to help all people instead of just a few, and they began to work together to find solutions. Hopefully, in the future, people can protest without it getting violent or dangerous.
