In 2011, a big earthquake happened in Japan. This made a big wave, called a tsunami, which hit some power plants that make electricity. One of these power plants had a special thing inside of it called a nuclear reactor, which makes heat to make electricity.
When the tsunami hit, it damaged the nuclear reactor and some of the stuff inside it leaked out. This stuff is called radiation and it can hurt people if they get too close or if they breathe it in.
The people who work at the power plant tried really hard to stop the leak and make it safe again, but it was very hard and took a long time. Lots of people had to leave their homes because it wasn't safe for them to be near the power plant.
Even though it was a really big problem, people worked together to try to fix it and learn from it so it wouldn't happen again in the future.
