ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

2016–17 film awards season

Imagine you're about to finish a drawing you've been working really hard on. You want to show it to your mom and dad, but before you do, you want to make sure it looks perfect. So you take out all your colored pencils and start coloring and shading until it looks exactly how you want it to.

That's kind of like what happens during the film awards season. It's like a big competition where lots of people who make movies (like directors, actors, and writers) try to create the best movies they can.

Then, there are different groups (kind of like judges) who watch all the movies and decide which ones they like the most. Some people might like a movie because the acting is really good, or because the story is really interesting.

At the end of the awards season, there is a big ceremony (kind of like a graduation or a sports trophy ceremony) where the people who made the best movies get special awards, kind of like your medal at your school's field day.

Some of the most popular awards ceremonies are the Oscars, the Golden Globes, and the Screen Actors Guild Awards. People always get really excited about who is going to win, and sometimes there are surprises!
