ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

2017–18 film awards season

Okay kiddo, so the film awards season is when people give out awards to movies that they really liked. This usually happens at the end of the year and the beginning of the next year.

There are a lot of different groups who give out these awards. Some of the most popular ones are the Golden Globe Awards, the Screen Actors Guild Awards, and the Academy Awards (also known as the Oscars).

To be eligible for these awards, a movie usually needs to come out sometime between the beginning of the previous year and the end of the current year. This means that movies that come out at the beginning of the year might be forgotten by the time awards season comes around.

When people are deciding which movies deserve awards, they look at lots of different things. They look at the story (what happens in the movie), the acting (how good the actors were), the cinematography (how the movie was filmed), the music, and lots of other stuff too.

Once all the movies have been watched and the winners have been chosen, there will be big ceremonies where the awards are given out. This is usually a really exciting time for people in the movie industry, because they get to celebrate all their hard work and see their friends and colleagues get recognized for their amazing talent.
