In 2018, a lot of people got angry because the government wanted to sign a thing called the International Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Racial Discrimination, or ICERD for short. Essentially, this means that countries that sign it agree to try their very best to get rid of all kinds of racism and discrimination.
Some people in Malaysia didn't like this idea, and they decided to have a big rally where they protested against it. They were afraid that if Malaysia signed this agreement, it would mean that Malaysians wouldn't have the freedom to choose their own religion and culture anymore.
However, there were also many people who disagreed with the anti-ICERD protesters. They felt that Malaysia needed to stand with other countries in fighting racism and discrimination, and that signing this agreement would be a good way to do that.
So there were two groups with different opinions, both trying to make their voices heard. In the end, the government decided not to sign the agreement after all, but people are still talking about whether this was the right decision or not.
