ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

22.2 surround sound

Okay kiddo, so you know how when you listen to music or watch a movie, all the sounds come from the same place? Like, you hear everything from the TV or the speaker in front of you, right?

Well, 22.2 surround sound is like having lots of little speakers all around you so that you can hear different sounds coming from different places. Imagine you're standing in the middle of a circle and there are 22 speakers all around you - some on the ground, some on the walls, some up high - and each speaker is playing a different sound.

So if something is happening in the movie on the left side of the screen, you'll hear the sound coming from the speaker that's on your left. If there's someone talking behind you in the movie, you'll hear their voice coming from the speakers behind you.

It's kind of like being in the middle of the action and hearing all the sounds like they're actually happening around you. Cool, huh?
