ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

3-MCPD

Okay kiddo, so 3-mcpd is a big word that means something very specific. It's a chemical that can be found in some of the food we eat. When we eat food that has this chemical in it, it can be harmful to our bodies if we have too much.

You know how when we cook food, we can sometimes get little black bits on it? Well, those little black bits actually come from something called "hydrochloric acid", which is used to process certain types of food. When food is exposed to hydrochloric acid, it can create 3-mcpd as a byproduct. Think of it like how when you make a paper snowflake, you end up with little scraps of paper on the floor. The snowflake is the thing you wanted to make, but the scraps are what's leftover.

So, why is 3-mcpd bad for us? Well, when we have too much of it, it can damage our organs and maybe even give us cancer. That's why food companies are working hard to reduce the amount of 3-mcpd in their products. Some countries even have rules that say how much 3-mcpd is allowed in food.

But don't worry! There are still lots of yummy foods we can eat that don't have much (or any) 3-mcpd in them. We just have to be aware of what we're eating and make smart choices.
