ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

AS Long As Possible (ASLAP)

Okay kiddo, have you ever heard of recycling? It's when we take things that we don't need anymore, like old papers or cans, and turn them into new things instead of throwing them away.

Well, sometimes when things get recycled, they can't be turned into new things forever. That's when something called "downcycling" happens.

Downcycling means that the recycled material can only be used to make something that's not as good or useful as the original thing. For example, if you take an old plastic bottle and recycle it, it might end up getting turned into a park bench. The park bench is still useful, but it's not as good as the plastic bottle was when it was new.

So, why is downcycling a problem? Well, it's not as good for the environment or for our wallets. When we downcycle, we end up using more resources to make new things because the recycled materials aren't as useful. And since we're using more resources, it can cost more money too.

That's why it's important to try to recycle things in a way that allows them to be turned into new things for as long as possible. That way, we're making the most of the resources we have and we're doing our part to take care of the earth.
