Abbreviations are words or phrases that are made up of initials, or the first letters of words. In music, abbreviations are often used to represent musical terms, instruments or techniques. For example, SC is an abbreviation for Solo Cello, which is a musical term for when a cello (a stringed instrument) is featured and played by just one musician. Another example is Pizz, which is an abbreviation for pizzicato, a technique used on string instruments like the violin and cello where the strings are plucked with the finger instead of being bowed (rubbed with a bow). Abbreviations can also be used to quickly notate (write in music) what style of music is being played, like G for Gospel, or RnB for Rhythm and Blues.
