Abolitionism was a movement in the United States that started in the 1700s to end the practice of slavery. Slavery is when people were bought and sold like objects, made to work without pay, and treated like animals. Abolitionists were people who believed that slavery was wrong and wanted it to be stopped. They worked in many different ways, such as writing books, organizing marches and protests, and speaking out in public to spread their message. Eventually Congress passed a law that ended slavery in the United States. This was a huge victory for the abolitionists and one of the most important civil rights victories in our nation's history!
