Abyssal plain

An abyssal plain is a big, flat area on the bottom of the ocean that is really deep. Imagine if you could take a big imaginary elevator down to the bottom of the ocean. As you go deeper and deeper, the water gets colder and darker. Eventually, you would reach the abyssal plain which is so flat and smooth that it would look like a big flat desert, but instead of sand, it is covered in mud and tiny pieces of rocks. It is also really, really dark down there, and sometimes creatures that live in the ocean are able to make their home there. The abyssal plain is one of the most mysterious places on earth because it is so hard for people to explore it. Scientists use cool machines like submarines and robots to help them see and learn about this interesting place!
