ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Academic age

Academic age is like a number that tells you how old someone is in school years. It's a way for people who study and work in schools to talk about how much experience someone has in a certain grade or level of education.

When you start a new grade or level, like going from kindergarten to first grade or from middle school to high school, you start at a certain academic age. That's like saying you're starting fresh and new, with no experience yet in that particular grade or level.

As you move through the years, your academic age gets older. This means you have more experience and knowledge than you did when you started. So someone who's been in high school for three years would have an academic age of three, while someone who's just starting high school for the first time would have an academic age of one.

Academic age can also be used to talk about people who are older and going back to school. For example, if someone took a break from school for a few years and then went back to finish their degree, their academic age would be older than someone who had just graduated from high school and started college right away.

It's important to remember that academic age is just one way to think about someone's experience and knowledge in school. Everyone's journey is different, and some people might have lots of experience even if they're technically at a lower academic age. But overall, academic age is a helpful way to talk about how much someone knows and has learned in school.
