ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Acid–base homeostasis

Acid-base homeostasis is all about keeping the right balance of acid and base in your body.

Your body is made up of many different kinds of molecules and cells, and some of them produce acid when they do their job. This can be a problem if too much acid builds up, because it can damage your cells and make you feel sick.

To keep this from happening, your body has a system for balancing out the acid with something called a base. So when there's too much acid, your body uses a base to neutralize it, like adding milk to a cup of coffee to make it less strong.

Your body also has a control center called the kidneys, which help to maintain the right balance of acid and base by filtering out excess acid or base and adjusting the levels in your blood.

So with the help of these systems, your body is able to stay in balance and keep you healthy and feeling good!
