ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Adenosine receptor

Okay, so you know how when you play a game for a super long time, you start feeling really tired and you just wanna take a nap? That's because your body makes something called adenosine when you use your brain a lot, and adenosine makes you feel sleepy.

Now, there are little things in your brain called adenosine receptors and they are like tiny lockers that adenosine fits into. When adenosine fits into these lockers, it tells your brain that you are tired and need to rest.

But sometimes, people want to stay awake and keep playing their game, so they use something called caffeine. Caffeine is like a key that fits into the adenosine receptor lockers and blocks adenosine from getting in. That's why you feel more awake when you drink coffee or energy drinks.

But, you have to be careful not to have too much caffeine because it can make you feel sick and jittery. And, your body still needs rest even if caffeine makes you feel awake. So, make sure you still get enough sleep even if you want to keep playing your game all night!
