Admission to practice law

So, you know how you have to be a certain age to drive a car or watch a scary movie? Well, becoming a lawyer is kind of like that too. You have to do certain things first before you are allowed to practice law.

First, you have to go to school for a long time – almost as long as when you go to grade school and high school combined! This is called law school. Here you learn about different laws and how to be a good lawyer.

Next, you have to take a very big test to show that you learned all the right things in law school. It’s kind of like a big test that you take at the end of the school year, but it’s way harder and takes longer. This is the bar exam.

Once you pass the bar exam, you have to show that you’re trustworthy and won’t do bad things as a lawyer. So, you have to pass a background check and show that you have good character.

Then, you can finally be admitted to practice law! This means you’re allowed to help people with legal stuff like going to court and writing contracts. But being a lawyer is a big responsibility and you have to keep following the rules so you don’t lose your license to practice law.
