ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Advowson

Imagine that there's a fancy restaurant that's really popular and a lot of people want to eat there. In order to eat there, you need to have a reservation - kind of like a ticket that says you can come eat at the restaurant.

Now, imagine that there's a special kind of ticket called an "advowson." This ticket is like a super special ticket that gives you the right to choose who gets to be the priest at a church. It's kind of like being in charge of who gets to work at the restaurant, but for a church instead.

Historically, advowson was a term used in England to describe the right to appoint a priest or bishop to a specific church or parish. This right was often held by lords or other wealthy people who had influence in the church.

So, if you had an advowson, you could choose who got to be the priest at your local church. This meant that you had a lot of control over what happened at the church and how services were conducted.

However, nowadays advowsons are not really used anymore. Instead, priests are usually appointed by the church itself, rather than by a specific person or group.
