ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Aerial skiing

Aerial skiing is when people stick big jumps and do flips and twists in the air before they land on their skis. Imagine it's like jumping off a diving board. But instead of going into a pool of water, people jump off a ramp that's covered in snow and do flips and twists before they land on more snow.

Aerial skiing is usually done by very skilled athletes who have spent lots of time practicing how to jump and land safely. They wear special ski gear that protects them if they fall and helps them move more smoothly through the air.

After skiing or snowboarding down a hill, the aerial skier will head to a specialized area where there's a very steep ramp. The ramp has a curved takeoff area, similar to a half-pipe in a skatepark. This helps the skier go higher and farther as they jump off the ramp.

Once they reach the end of the ramp, the skier will launch themselves into the air, usually doing a backflip or front flip. If they're really skilled, they might even do a double or triple backflip! They'll carefully watch where the ground is, and then rotate their body in the air to try and land safely on their skis.

Aerial skiing is an exciting sport to watch, but it can be very dangerous if the skier doesn’t land properly. That's why safety is a top priority, and why the athletes need to be very skilled before attempting these jumps. So if you ever see aerial skiing on TV or in person, make sure to cheer the athletes on and appreciate just how hard it is to pull off those amazing flips and twists in the air!
