ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Age of the Earth

Hello there, little one! Let's talk about how old the Earth is.

The Earth is very, very old. In fact, it's so old that it's hard to even imagine how old it really is! Scientists think that the Earth is around 4.54 billion years old.

To understand how scientists know how old the Earth is, we have to talk a little bit about rocks. Do you know what a rock is? It's a hard thing that you can find in nature, like stones, pebbles or boulders.

Some rocks are very old. When rocks form, they can trap tiny pieces of other things inside them. These tiny pieces are called "radioactive isotopes." These isotopes are very useful for telling us how old the rock is.

Scientists can measure how much of these isotopes are left in a rock, and how much has decayed over time. By doing this, they can figure out how long ago the rock formed.

By studying many different rocks from all over the world, scientists have determined that the Earth is about 4.54 billion years old. That's a very long time! It's older than dinosaurs, older than the pyramids in Egypt, and older than any human ever lived.

So, there you have it, kiddo! The Earth is very, very old, and scientists figured this out by looking at rocks and measuring tiny things inside them.
