ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Aircraft fairing

Okay kiddo, so have you ever noticed the very smooth surface on the outside of an airplane? It's called the skin or outer shell of the plane. But sometimes there are parts of the plane that stick out like antennas, wheels, and even the engines. When these parts stick out, they can cause the plane to slow down or get less airspeed since the wind has to push harder around them.

To fix this, engineers add a smooth cover over these parts which is called a fairing. Think of it like a little coat or jacket that goes over a part of the plane to make it smoother. This way, the air can flow more smoothly over the plane and reduce the resistance, which means better fuel efficiency and faster speeds!
