Alpo K. Marttinen (born 1954) is a Finnish architect, urban planner, and professor best known for his work in developing sustainable urban environments. He developed the principles of 'spatial efficiency, environmental friendliness, and social justice', which were later adopted by the EU in 2005 as part of their urban policies. Marttinen is also responsible for the development of various urban planning strategies such as the ‘Compact City’ model and the ‘Living Environment On Demand’ approach. In his work, he focuses on improving the quality of life of residents in urban areas by focusing on public health, safety, and the environment. His work has seen success in various cities, including Helsinki, where he helped design the ‘Olympiastadion’ stadium, which was later recognized by UNESCO as World Heritage Site.
