ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Alternatim

Alright, imagine you have a big cookie jar filled with different types of cookies. Sometimes you want to have a chocolate chip cookie and sometimes you want to have an oatmeal cookie. Alternatim is like choosing which cookie you want to eat but with music instead of cookies.

In the olden days, people used to sing songs in church all together but sometimes, they wanted to switch things up and sing different songs. Instead of just randomly picking a song, they had a special way of doing it called alternatim.

One group of singers would sing part of a song, then another group of singers would sing a different part. They would take turns singing until they finished the whole song. It was like taking turns choosing which cookie to eat from the cookie jar but with singing instead.

Nowadays, alternatim is still used in some types of music, especially church music. It’s a fun way to sing and keeps things interesting by switching things up.
