ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Alternatives to animal testing

Hello there! Today I'm going to explain to you why animal testing is not the only way to test products, and what some of the alternatives are.

When we talk about animal testing, it means that some products are tested on animals before they are sold to people like you and me. It's not very nice because animals sometimes can get hurt or sick because of what they are tested with.

But thankfully, there are other ways of testing products instead of using animals. Here are some of them:

1. Computer models: There are special computer programs that can predict how a product might interact with the human body. Although they can't perfectly replicate all aspects of human biology, computer models can simulate the body's response to different substances with surprising accuracy.

2. Cell cultures: Scientists can grow human cells in a lab, which can be used to test how a product might affect the body. This way of testing is more accurate than using animals because human cells are used instead of animals which are different from human beings.

3. Artificial skin: Synthetically made human skin that contains the same proteins and lipids that real skin does, can be used to test products that are meant to be applied to the skin.

4. Volunteering human beings: Sometimes, people who are willing to test a product can be found (usually people who are paid for this) and the product is applied to their skin or given to them to take as a pill or injection. This way of testing is called clinical trials, and it's done under very strict rules to make sure nobody gets hurt.

All these methods are better than animal testing because they are less cruel and more accurate in predicting how a product will affect human beings.

I hope you learned something new today!
