Amateurism in the NCAA

Okay kiddo, so have you ever heard of college sports? Like when your school's basketball or football team plays against another school's team? Well, there's a big group of colleges and universities that are all part of a big organization called the NCAA.

The NCAA makes rules for how college sports are played and how the players on those teams are allowed to act. One of the really important rules is called "amateurism."

Now, being an "amateur" means that someone is doing something just for fun and not for money. So in college sports, the players are supposed to be doing it just because they love the game and want to play for their school, not because they're trying to make a lot of money.

The NCAA says that college athletes can't make any money from playing their sport. They can't get paid for playing in games, and they can't make money from selling autographs or merchandise. They also can't have a job that's connected to their sport, like coaching younger kids or working at a sports camp.

Some people think that these rules are unfair, because college sports make a LOT of money for the schools and the NCAA, but the players don't see any of that money. Other people think that the rules help keep college sports pure and focused on the love of the game, rather than on making money.

So that's what amateurism means in college sports!
