ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

American football

American Football is a sport played between two teams of 11 players each. Each team is trying to get the ball across the other team's goal line. In order to do this, each team has different players who do different jobs.

The people who throw and catch the ball are called quarterbacks, wide receivers, and tight ends. The people who run the ball are called running backs. The people who try to tackle the other team's players and help protect their quarterback are called linemen.

Each team gets four tries, or downs, to get the ball to the other team's goal line. For each down, the offense (the team with the ball) gets a certain number of yards to try to get the ball to the end zone. If they don’t get the yards they need on three of the four tries, they have to give the ball to the other team.

The team that has the ball wants to score points by getting the ball into the other team’s end zone. A touchdown is worth six points if the offense runs or throw the ball into the end zone. After they make a touchdown, they can try to kick the ball through the goal posts for an extra point. If they don’t have enough yards to get the ball into the end zone, they can kick a field goal for three points.

At the end of each game, the team with the most points wins.
