ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Amicable triple

An amicable triple is like having three toy cars that all play together nicely and share their toys with each other. But instead of toy cars, we are talking about numbers in math!

An amicable triple is a group of three numbers where the sum of the factors (numbers that can be multiplied together to get the original number) of the first number in the group is equal to the second number in the group, and the sum of the factors of the second number in the group is equal to the third number in the group.

Let's use an example to explain this.

One amicable triple is (220, 284, 1184).

To find out if they are an amicable triple, we need to calculate the sum of the factors of each number.

For 220, the factors are 1, 2, 4, 5, 10, 11, 20, 22, 44, 55, and 110. If we add all of these together, we get 284.

For 284, the factors are 1, 2, 4, 71, and 142. If we add all of these together, we get 220.

So we see that the sum of the factors of 220 is equal to 284, and the sum of the factors of 284 is equal to 220.

This means that these three numbers are friends and they play nicely together, just like the toy cars I mentioned earlier!
