ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Androgen insensitivity syndrome

Okay, so you know how boys and girls have different body parts, right? Boys have a penis and girls have a vagina. But did you know that there are some people who were born with a body that's kind of like both a boy and a girl?

One thing that makes someone a boy or a girl is a special hormone called testosterone. It helps boys grow things like facial hair, bigger muscles and a deeper voice. But sometimes, some people's bodies can't use testosterone the right way. This is called "androgen insensitivity syndrome," or AIS for short.

People with AIS are usually born looking like girls, but their bodies are actually made up more like boys. So, they have boy parts inside that you can't see, but they look like girls on the outside. This can make things pretty confusing for them and their families.

Even though their bodies look like girls on the outside, people with AIS usually don't get their periods or be able to have babies when they grow up because of the boy parts inside. But they can still grow up happy and healthy, just like anybody else.

Doctors can help people with AIS by talking to them and their families about the best way to take care of their bodies, and sometimes they might need surgery to help them feel better. And that's it, kiddo!
