ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Anu

Anu is a term from the ancient civilization of Sumer, which was located where modern-day Iraq is now. Anu was considered to be the most powerful god in their religion, and was believed to be the god of the sky and of the sun. People would pray to Anu for protection and guidance, and they would bring offerings to his temples in order to please him.

Imagine Anu like the king of all the gods. Like a king, Anu was very powerful and important, and people considered him to be in charge of everything. Just like a king might sit on a throne, Anu was thought to sit on a throne in the sky, watching over everything that happened on the earth.

People believed that if they were good and followed the rules, Anu would protect them and bless them with good things. But if they did bad things, Anu might punish them. That's why people would try very hard to please Anu by being good and offering him things like food and beautiful objects.

Today, we don't worship Anu anymore, but we can learn about ancient civilizations like the Sumerians by studying their beliefs and culture.
