Aposymbiotic

"Aposymbiotic" means without any symbiotic (friendly) bacteria living inside us.

You know how sometimes we get sick and need to take medicine to feel better? Well, sometimes medicine can also kill the good bacteria inside our bodies that helps us stay healthy! Without these good bacteria, our bodies can't work as well and might be more likely to get sick again.

But sometimes, even without medicine, our bodies don't have enough good bacteria. That's what it means to be "aposymbiotic". It's like not having enough good helpers to keep us healthy.

Luckily, scientists are working hard to understand what kinds of good bacteria we need, and how to get them if we don't have enough. They may even be able to make special medicines or foods that help us stay healthy by giving us the right kinds of friendly bacteria.
