ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

aerodynamic lift

Imagine that your hand is like a airplane. When you move your hand through the air, you feel a force. This force is called aerodynamic lift. It happens when air flow past your hand. The air flow creates a low-pressure area on the top of your hand, which allows the air to push your hand up. So the air pushes your hand up, just like when you hold out your hand in a car window and you feel the wind pushing your hand up. This same force creates lift on airplanes, too.
