ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Apple silicon

Okay kiddo, have you heard of Apple - the company that makes iPhones, iPad, iPod, and MacBook? Well, they have something new called Apple Silicon. You know what a brain is, right? Just like your brain controls your body, the Silicon chip controls a computer.

Now, before Apple Silicon, Macs had chips made by a different company called Intel. You can think of it like how you liked some foods when you were younger, but now you like new foods. That’s what Apple did with their Macs. They wanted a new chip that was faster, smarter, and used less energy.

So, Apple made their own chip for their computers called M1. M1 is a small chip that does the work that used to need several chips. Remember how you had to carry a lot of books to school? The M1 chip is like carrying all your books in one bag.

This means Apple’s new Macs with M1 chips are faster, like how you can run faster than your little brother. They also have much longer battery life, like how your toy car can keep running longer if you get bigger batteries.

One more thing - you know how different parts of your body can talk to each other? Well, the M1 chip has different parts (CPU, GPU, RAM) that talk to each other very quickly, so everything on the Mac works smoothly, like how you and your friends quickly plan a fun game to play outside.

So, that’s Apple Silicon. It’s a new, smart chip that makes Macs faster, smarter, and use less energy. Oh, one more thing, it’s called ‘Silicon’ because that’s what the chip is made of - tiny particles called ‘silicon atoms.’
