ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Approximate group

Okay kiddo, have you ever played with a group of your friends? When you all play together, you're called a group! Now imagine your group got really big, like there were so many kids that it was hard to keep track of how many there were. That's where an approximate group comes in.

An approximate group is when you have a really big group of things or people, and you don't know exactly how many there are. But instead of trying to count each one, you can make an educated guess about how many there might be based on how they look or behave.

For example, if you saw a big group of birds flying in the sky, you might not be able to count each bird, but you could guess that there were maybe 50 or 100 of them based on how many you could see at one time. This is an approximate group!

Scientists and researchers use approximate groups a lot when they're studying things like animals and people, because it's hard to count every single one. So they use their best guess to get an idea of how many there are. Pretty cool, huh?
