Approximate measures are ways of estimating or figuring out how much of something there is, without having to count all of it. Sometimes, it is too hard or too confusing to count every single thing, so we use approximate measures to get a close idea of how much there is. For example, if you want to know how many items are in a box, but you don't want to count every single one, you could approximate it by multiplying how many of them you can fit in your hand by how many hands-fulls fit in the box. That's one way of approximating how many items are in the box!
