ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Apraxia

Apraxia is when someone has difficulty doing certain things, like waving goodbye or putting on a jacket. It's like their brain forgets how to make their body do things it used to know how to do. It's kind of like when you forget the words to a song you used to know - your brain knows you should remember, but you just can't make it happen.

Sometimes people with apraxia can still do certain things without thinking about it, like walking or chewing, but they might have trouble doing things that need more complex movements or coordination, like writing or buttoning a shirt.

Apraxia can happen for different reasons - maybe someone had a stroke or an injury to their brain, or maybe they have a developmental disorder that affects how their brain and body work together. But there are ways to help people with apraxia learn how to do things again, like practicing movements or using tools to help with coordination.
