Articulatory synthesis

Articulatory synthesis is when a computer makes a sound that sounds like a person talking. It does this by making a model of the mouth and throat called the vocal tract. The vocal tract is like a tube that air goes through when you talk. The computer can make different sounds by moving parts of the vocal tract, like your tongue or lips.

To make a sound, the computer tells the different parts of the vocal tract how to move. It does this by using math and physics, just like when you play with blocks or balls. Once the computer knows how to move the vocal tract, it can make lots of different sounds by changing how the parts move.

Articulatory synthesis is used to make computers talk in a more natural way. This helps people who have trouble speaking or hearing, or who need to talk to computers for work or fun.
